Blood Pressure Medications

There are practically dozens of high blood pressure medications available in the marketplace, with their own potential advantages and disadvantages. Quite obviously, you should not take blood pressure medications without prior consulting a medical practitioner. As suggested by the National High Blood Pressure Regulation Program, blood pressure medications can be advised in order to lower high blood pressure.

Pre-Hypertension

If you are diagnosed with pre-hypertension, that is, your blood pressure level lies between 120/80 and 139/89, you are on the threshold of developing high blood pressure. However, this should not be an issue of anxiety. By doing simple lifestyle changes, you can keep your high blood pressure problem at bay. In order to avoid problems, you have to avoid smoking in the first place. Then you must eat healthy diet to maintain a healthy weight. And last but not least you have to limit the intake of your alcohol consumption.

Stage-1 High Blood Pressure

If you are diagnosed with stage 1 high blood pressure, that is, your blood pressure level lies between 140/90 and 159/99, it is quite likely that your doctor will advise you some blood pressure medications such as Beta Blockers, Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, Angiotensin II receptor blockers and Calcium channel blockers. The functions of each of these blood pressure medications are different. While beta blockers help in reducing the nerve signals to the blood vessels and heart, calcium channel blockers, as its name suggests, helps in preventing calcium to the blood vessels and heart muscles.

Stage-2 High Blood Pressure

If you are diagnosed with the stage 2 high blood pressure, that is, your blood pressure level is over 160/100, doctors will go for blood pressure medications like ACE inhibitor, angiotensin II receptor blocker, beta blocker and calcium channel blocker. Diagnosis of isolated systolic hyper-tension leads doctors to advise low dose of thiazide diuretic or water pill at the first place. In addition, doctors also suggest having calcium channel blockers.

No matter what result comes in your diagnosis, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle at every stage of life, even if you are not diagnosed with any problem. Lifestyle management in combination with appropriate dosage of blood pressure medications can help an individual to live a happy and worthy life.
